"Relena will be the one to restore your ideal kingdom, Father. And I will fight for her sake. So, please forgive this hopeless son of yours"

I've been a fan of Gundam Wing since it came out in Japan in 1995 and from the first time I saw it, it has held the illustrious spot of my favorite anime of all time. It was serious, thought-provoking, well written, and showcased smashing character designs (not to mention the most desirable man to come out of Japan -real or otherwise- Treize Kushrenade). I've always wanted to make costumes from this series, but was stopped short by its popularity on the cosplay circle and the... peculiarities... of some of its fans.

Flash forward to 2003. The craze is ending, and I find someone willing to be Noin, so that I may have my female counterpart with me (for the record, I highly dislike Gundam Wing yaoi and will have nothing to do with it). Fabrics are bought, work is started... and I get swept up by other projects. A year later, I realise that the 10 year anniversary of Gundam Wing is fast approaching and I switch to high gear, getting a group together for Anime Boston 2005.

From the start, I chose to go with the dress version of the uniforms with the capes, as they were more striking to the eye. The costumes I made (Noin, Treize and Zechs) were based on historical uniforms, fully lined, with all buttons functional (with bound buttonholes no less), and featured period shirts, lace-trimmed scarves (even those that didn't show!), vests and jackets as well as identical cloak-pins and belts. To this I added replicas of the weapons used in the show, in the form of Zechs's and Treize's custom guns and holters, as well as Treize's ceremonial saber. Noin's gun and holster were lent to Une who had issues with making hers.

The skit planned for these costumes had to be aborted due to an uncooperative tech crew, but I still hope one day to be able to go onstage with these costumes. I'm disappointed we missed the 10th anniversary, but at least I have good stories to tell, I never won an award without going onstage before.
