Back in the day, like many, I had spent hours lost in the world of Fushigi Yuugi. I will easily admit that the storyline was rather trite, and that the incapability on the part of the author to let dead people stay dead did not endear her to me, but somehow her characters managed to captivate me nonetheless. Two of them, Hotohori and Nuriko, were always high on my list, and I had been planning on cosplaying them for a very long time. The initial idea had me casted as the Emperor, but after four years and as many change of plans, the group ended up being myself and my good friend Ali, who, due to her height, brought on a recast.

The costume is from the cover of one of the Japanese LD which feature Nuriko and Hotohori in court robes. My favorite part of this endeavour was researching Tang China (The inspiration for Konan Country and the world of Fushigi Yuugi in general), particularily its fabrics and sewing techniques. The costume is fully hand-sewn, although I did skip a few seams where I could, courtesy of our wide modern fabrics.

Ali as Hotohori, Tasuki-chan as Miaka, Lyn as Tamahome.
